Al Dente is a food journal produced and published by undergraduate students at The University of Alabama. Al Dente aims to emphasize the connection between food and place through various creative mediums such as visual art, poetry, essays, and even unusual recipes. For each submission we ask that writers identify a real world location to emphasize this connection.
Theme
The theme of the inaugural issue is: Devour.
Extending far beyond its role as a necessity for life, each meal we eat has a journey before reaching your plate. We don’t just eat, we consume. Whether it is through the production of a single ingredient, or how a recipe is passed down from generation to generation, each aspect of a recipe takes us on a journey across space and time. To grasp the essence of what we eat is to embrace the landscapes crucial to its manifestation. Through physical and social landscapes, tradition, and creation, food is a point of connection. From farm to table, region to region, or freezer to microwave, each bite has a story.
